This Malaysian’s Money Milestones

We all aim for the first one hundred thousand dollars and then one million dollars. But there’s a lot that happens between those milestones!

In this blog post, I’m listing my personal money milestones. I cannot remember them all but there are some ‘memorable’ ones, not in particular sequence:

  1. The first RM10,000 savings
  2. Breaking past my RM10,000 savings barrier True story _ my savings were stagnated at RM10K for many years. Idky I felt at the time that was more than enough and it was only that I manage to break out of my limiting mindset. I was so financially illiterate for someone with a bachelors degree!
  3. Having 3, 6 and 12 months of emergency savings
  4. Paying off my first and only car I no longer own one after my parents purposely sold it off in hope I’d get a new one. It never happened 🤣
  5. First overseas travel and then subsequent ones I think I only did 7 countries, 2 of which recently. Fun fact: I didn’t fly for 5 years since the pandemic and then find myself boarding the plane to another city almost every month the past 4 months🤣
  6. RM0 Credit Card Debts 😭 Yes, been there.
  7. First RM5,000 payroll 🥹
  8. The first RM100,000 Net Worth (exclude EPF) It was the first time managing 6-digit figures 🥹
  9. The first RM100,000 portfolio
  10. Savings-cum-investment on hand matching to EPF amount During my stagnant saving years, my monies on hand was lower than EPF and I was like WTF am I doing?! Then started the marathon to catch up with it.
  11. RM10,000 per stock
  12. The first PRS contribution
  13. The first RM10,000 worth of gold
  14. A locally diversified portfolio
  15. A globally diversified portfolio
  16. RM10,000 annual dividend, ROI or passive income
  17. Hitting >40% monthly savings or investing rate
  18. Earning monies in foreign currencies
  19. First RM1,000 per annum donation

In hindsight, hitting each of these milestones feels like just a natural part of the journey. But honestly, at that time they were all things I figured out along the way.

Obviously every subsequent thousands or ten thousands bump whether in savings, investments, ROI or Net Worth are worth the celebrations. But for now, I think I’ll leave those out. I’d like to remain quite vague about my Net Worth and appreciate if question about it is not brought up. Tho I can say at 30-ish young, I’m not a millionaire yet.

The other milestones I think of and would love to achieve are these.

  1. RM10,000++ and/or $10,000++ annual dividend or ROI
  2. RM100,000+ per annum payroll
  3. Fly to 10+ countries
  4. 20% or more for Mortgage DP
  5. Paying off first home
  6. RM0 Net Worth as in the intersection when your assets = liabilities meet; not the starting point aiyoo 😅
  7. First 100g or 1kg Gold 🤑
  8. Funding big ticket items or goals (education, travel, car) with just passive income
  9. Helping family financially without affecting own personal finance goals
  10. Having 30% or more than annual expenses covered by passive income
  11. Reaching coast fire (where investment can grow to sustain retirement without additional contribution)
  12. Taking sabbatical without worrying about money
  13. Having a full year worth of expenses covered by passive income
  14. Earning more from investment than salary in a single year
  15. Reaching half-a-million ringgit Net Worth
  16. Reaching a million ringgit Net Worth

So what do you think?

How many of these have you checked off? Any particular ones you aiming for? Or better yet, aiming for all? 🙋🏻‍♀️

No matter where you are in your journey, I think we can all relate to striving for better! Sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit!
