2024 Money Moves: Change of Plans

As the year draws closer to the end, I reflect on my 2024 personal money plans and the changes in some of them. Some I decided against going ahead while some unexpected additions happen as I see opportunities in them.

Table of Contents

1. SREITs

This was something I was sure I wanted and went ahead with it. I don't recall how it started but I remember reading this book which I enjoyed reading. I just noticed its dated 2020!

This means it took me 4 years before I got a Singapore brokerage account and bought my first SREIT!

As of year-to-date, I've earned approximately $400 in dividends. I have plans to continue contributing to this bucket.

I guess this was made possible with IBKR but now I'm loving MooMoo Malaysia more. The Wise transfer fee is such a pain!

Obligatory MooMoo Affiliate link if you'd like to diverse to SG (Finally! *chef kiss*) and even US Market on top of buying/selling local stocks on MooMoo!

Best of all? You can get your account made in a few minutes!!

2. Trading

After having being burnt before, I vouched never to take silly risks and to stick to safe, 'boring' instruments. Just so you know, these boring ones have better returns albeit slow.

However, I find myself back into the trading sphere. With proper plans.

I wouldn't get into the details because I've only started about 6 months ago. Furthermore, they haven't shown long-term consistent returns to worth bragging.

Have there been paper losses? Yes.

Was there emotional rollercoasters. Also yes.

I set a 2024 goal of $1,300 and as of mid September 2024 have a realized profit of slightly over $400 and paper gains of $500.

I have since increased my 2024 target and aggressively contributing my monthly savings into this bucket.

3. Peer-to-Peer Lending

One of the many investments vehicles I chance across while looking for investing ideas is P2P. I see some Malaysia PF folks dabbling and profiting from this.

But I've read how there are more startups failing this year and decided to take a step back.

4. Being a home owner

I have dreamt of owning a place and then renting it out for side income but after much considerations decided to delay.

For one, owning a home will reduce my investment bucket, delaying my financial plans. It isn't a guarantee to profit either. What's more I'll be paying another person's worth of salary monthly because you know that almost half of monthly mortgages is really interest. So with a RM2,500 mortgage, you'll prolly pay over RM1,000 in interest.

The other is the opportunity costs. I still can put a large bucket of my monies to work now besides chances to grow them.

You think I can do all these if I already own a mortgage? Maybe I can but it'll take me a longer timeframe to reach my other financial goals. Also like I say, it will cost me other opportunity costs.

Perhaps I'll let my money work now, then buy a much affordable house out of the city with a larger downpayment to save on the interest.

Or if my ship returns, I'll get one in the city with the same plan. Who knows? Shrugs.

I still daydream about owning my own place and view properties listing. In fact I'm getting a clearer idea of the place I wish to own! I'll keep sketching them in my head.

5. Gold

This year, unexpectedly i find myself in my Golden Girl era.

Yes, your girl loves bling bling.

Though of course I'm quite selective and love my pieces practical. Thankfully there are only limited super pretty options in the market. Still, I managed to come up with a list of pieces I'm eyeing HAHAHA

I've even crossed out a few of them!

Stopping myself from buying more because I don't want this to be a reason to push back achieving my financial goals.

If you're wondering, I don't see it as 'investment' since I don't plan to trade them when the market price increase. They are pieces I love and want to keep. Heirloom even.

Fact, I own a white gold necklace which I rarely remove for over a decade! Love it because its tarnish resistance. Also what can I say, I've got great taste from a young age!

Also have you heard about the gold pooping bacteria? Yes, alchemy! Imagine if lab grown diamonds could bring down the diamond proce, what can this do?

Anyways, I do both white and yellow gold. Here are some pieces I discovered and love! Obligatory affiliate links because your girl needs pocket money to invest!

1. Necklaces with clover charms in multiple designs one, two and three

2. London train charm or the aeroplane charm (so cute!) to go with a leather bracelet

What do you think? Share if you have other pretty recommendations!

6. Investing in the US Market

I wasn't planning on allocating my monies into this bucket. But with MooMoo Malaysia launching at the end of the first quarter with promise of an AAPL stock, I'm signed up.

Yes, I got the stock and then my first taste in owning a piece of S&P500 stock.

As of to-date, I only have a handful because gosh are US stock pricey.

I have yet to allocate more as my again, 'hasil' is quite limited but I may ensure to DCA from time-to-time.

7. Shifting from KLSE to SGX

At the start of the year I wanted to shift at least 70-80% of my portfolio in Bursa Malaysia (KLSE) to the Singapore Exchange (SGX).

I've liquidated my holdings but oddly, I'm unable to transfer my monies out from my Maybank CDS account! Somebody please enlighten me. I attempted the transfer from MAE app, Maybank trading account platform and they didn't work!

Though in an unexpected turn of event, our MYR became stronger and most stocks hit an all-time high!

While I have sold mine for profit, they'll probably would've grown more if I held. Bygones. Still, I'll take my profit thank you.

Concluding this post

I think sometimes plans change and we just need to go with the flow. Gotta always keep the options available!

One other thing I learn is that we have to be prepared to accept the opportunities that may came.

For that you need ✨️monies✨️

Hahah but really, it does take money to make money.
